Newton, Wi -- A truck vs. school bus crash occurred prior to 8 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Highway CR and Clover Road in the town of Newton, Manitowoc County, according to Sheriff's Department Deputy Inspector Todd Hermann.

A Brandt Buses 1999 International school bus with driver and six students traveling westbound on Clover Road entered the intersection at Highway CR and collided with a southbound Blue Water Services 1998 Kenworth Truck. The man driving the Kenworth was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The operator of the school bus was transported to Holy Family Memorial Medical Center for incapacitating injuries. The six children were released to parents at the scene with some reporting minor injuries.

This crash resulted in a utility pole getting hit in the southwest quadrant of the intersection, causing downed wires and a power outage in the Newton area.

The crash scene remains under investigation and the intersection is closed at Highway CR and Clover Road.

Newton Fire Department, Manitowoc County First Responders, Manitowoc County Fire and Rescue, Manitowoc Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol are assisting at the scene.

UPDATE: The students were heading to Monroe Elementary School in Manitowoc when the crash happened. Brandt Bus Company says they have a text and call system to alert parents of emergencies. A representative released this statement. "Accidents are just that, accidents.   People don't plan to have an accident.  Certainly we have had accidents in the past with drivers not yielding to school buses.  Distracted driving looms as major issue for any motorist on the road today.  Hands free cell phone while driving might be a good step in that direction.
