GREEN BAY (NBC26) — The Neville Public Museum could lose its accreditation if Brown County officials don't find a permanent leader soon.
"You can't have an accredited museum without somebody running it," Brown County Supervisor Patrick Evans told NBC 26.
Brown County officials restarted the search for a museum director this week after pausing to explore a possible merger with the Children's Museum of Green Bay.
On Monday, a task force told county leaders not to house the Children's Museum of Green Bay inside the Neville — an idea they had explored over the last several months.
"It was just a terrible fit," Evans said.
"We ran into a lot of financial issues," added Brown County Supervisor Dan Theno on the reasons for the recommendation.
The supervisors are now focused on moving forward.
For Evans, that mean hiring a director who will promote the museum and bring more traveling exhibits to it.
Theno stated that while the merger plan didn't pan out, he still wants the Neville to draw young guests.
"We had a couple programs this past year that really did that," Theno noted.

Future community partnerships aren't off the table, either. Theno said there's excess space in the Neville building that could host college groups for classes or events.
"So, we need somebody that's really going to have to come in and step it up a little bit," Evans said of the ideal museum director candidate. "I think that person is out there."
More than 40 candidates previously applied for the Neville's director position. Both supervisors say they're hopeful the right person for the job will be found this time around.
