Four people were taken to the hospital, including two children, after a fire broke out at a Green Bay apartment building early Tuesday morning.

All 21 tenants were displaced.

Firefighters were called to the 1300 block of South Taylor Street around 3 a.m. on September 26.

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department believes the fire started in the basement, but the cause is still under investigation.

Two people living in the apartment building spoke with NBC26 and said they were sleeping when fire alarms woke them up.

Neighbors were also woken up by the commotion.

"I saw all the neighbors that were in this building, they were out on the street," said Brandon Phillips, who lives nearby. "They were like babies crying, kids next to their parents."

Four tenants were brought to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, fire crews said.

Nine adults and 12 children were evacuated.

The fire department said this is a good example of why it's so important to have working smoke detectors in your home.

The gas and electric were still off in the building Tuesday evening, and all tenants will be kept out of the building during the investigation, crews said.
