A fatal fire at a Manitowoc apartment complex has been ruled unintentional, the Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department said Tuesday. The fire started in an apartment kitchen.

The fire broke out May 10 at the Parkview Haven apartments on N. 8th Street in Manitowoc. Dana Bushman, 57, died from smoke inhalation.

85 people were also displaced from the fire.

Investigators could not determine exactly what caused the fire, but did decide it was not criminal activity.

Manitowoc Fire Rescue is reminding everyone that October 8-14 is Fire Prevention Week. To prevent fires, remember that smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths. Always make sure cigarette butts or ashes are completely out before disposing them.

Also, never leave cooking food unattended. Cooking is the number one cause of home fires and home injuries.
