Janesville, WI

A Beloit man is beginning a major road trip later this week. He'll be pushing himself from Janesville in his wheelchair all the way to Green Bay. He's doing it to raise money for charities that are important to him and his family but also so more people understand the power we all have within us despite perceived limitations.

It's been five now years since Dennis Schulze lost his leg in a car wreck.

"In 2012 I got in a bad wreck in my semi and I had my right leg amputated while I was awake with a 42-percent chance of living," says Schulze.

But even without the leg Schulze has plans, of moving forward.

"This is in my heart. I’m going no matter what."

On Thursday he will begin the 170 mile journey in his wheelchair from Janesville all the way to Lambeau field. He will average about 5-7 miles a day and push through despite the weather headed our way.

"There's is so many people that can't get out of bed. There's people that can't walk. So that's why I do it," says Schulze.

He's also trying to raise money for five charities that have touched him and his family along the way. He would like to raise money for cancer and Alzheimer’s research, support for families of fallen police officers and funding for March of Dimes as well.

"It's a great relief knowing I accomplished something but it's a better relief knowing these people donated to the cause I’m doing this for."

So why would a guy do this? Why would he endure Wisconsin’s winter weather for nearly a month in his wheelchair? Well, Mr. Schulze says it's more than just raising money for his charities but it is also about sharing an important message with those who notice him along the way.

"No matter if you're handicap, no matter you're situation, you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it."

Some of the organizations Dennis is helping to support through his trek include the March of Dimes, Alzheimer’s and cancer research and funding for families of fallen police officers. Just check out the link below for all of the details and to find out how you can help.
