Three firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries after battling a fire Wednesday morning in the Town of Liberty.

Two were treated for heat exhaustion and one for a shoulder injury at Holy Family Memorial in Manitowoc, according to Valders Fire Chief Chris Dallas.  The firefighters were released from the hospital as of Wednesday night, Dallas said.

One cat died in the fire.

A passerby noticed the fire at 4107 Marken Road in the Town of Liberty, calling it in just before 9 a.m. 14 departments responded and found heavy smoke and fire in the rear of the house, according to Dallas.

He called it a "stubborn, hot, nasty fire," and said they needed extra manpower because of the heat and humidity.

Crews believe the fire started in a breezeway/mud room next to the kitchen on the first floor rear of the house.

The home is a 100-year-old structure, so crews had to remove insulation to break through walls and expose hot spots, according to Dallas.

The building is a total loss.

No one was living in the home at the time. The residents were staying elsewhere while a new home is being built, Dallas said.

The fire is not suspicious, but a cause is still unknown.
