Local police find support in communities they serve

Posted

After the tragic events in Dallas and the deaths of five police officers, local law enforcement here in northeast Wisconsin are now finding support within the communities they serve.

In Green Bay, a visible memorial is growing outside the police station with flowers, balloons and cards to say "thank you."

Other agencies, receiving support today as well as many departments stood in solidarity with Dallas by placing the black band over their badges, a symbol of mourning. This, while flags across Wisconsin were flying at half-staff as part of an order by President Obama.

In the wake of this tragedy, Grand Chute Police Chief Greg Peterson says unfortunately events like this are happening too frequently and the police community is very aware of just how often. He says a police officer is killed in the line of duty about every two and a half days.

Green Bay Chief Andrew Smith says local officers take each day to strengthen the trust and relationship built between police and the community. It's events like this that should help remind citizens that behind every badge is a person with a family they hope to return to each night.
