ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — Thursday kicks off the WIAA Tournament at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon. And people from across Wisconsin are coming to cheer on their teams and explore the Green Bay area.
The Visitor's Bureau tells NBC26 that this tournament's economic impact is estimated to be more than $2.5 million.
There are twenty teams participating in the tournament. Seventeen of those teams are staying at fifteen different hotels across the Green Bay area. The fans are also coming - the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitor's Bureau tells NBC26 nearly 40,000 people will attend the event.
"The fans are throughout the entire community,” says Marketing Director Brenda Krainik. “So, when they're in town, they're dining out, they're going shopping and they're really having a good time."
Brenda Krainik says they also visit some of Green Bay's attractions like Lambeau Field. Some of the teams even set up tours there during their breaks.
The Visitor's Bureau says anytime the city can host an event like this one and show off the city, it boosts the local economy, so they hope to continue to host this event in the future.
