APPLETON (NBC 26) -- Next Monday is Memorial Day, a time to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

In Appleton on Tuesday, volunteers continued the tradition of remembering the fallen by placing American flags on the graves of veterans at Riverside Cemetery.

"It's just a good American patriotic tradition that has to be kept up, and I think it's respected by almost everyone. They died for us and we certainly can't just not place a flag out for them by Memorial Day,” said Nancy Peterson.

Organizers estimate volunteers placed between 18,200 flags in preparation for Memorial Day.
