GREEN BAY, Wis. — UW-Green Bay is removing tuition waivers for student athletes competing in certain sports, the school announced Thursday.

UWGB says starting July 2020, student athletes competing in in men’s and women’s Swimming and Diving and Nordic Ski will no longer be eligible for athletic tuition waivers from the University. The school says student athletes competing in these sports will instead be eligible for private scholarships.

UWGB states in a news release that tuition waivers can pose challenges for schools with small athletics budgets.

Green Bay Athletics Director Charles Guthrie expects the change to impact about 50 to 60 students, the school says. According to Guthrie, the change will be phased in over the next year to provide students and parents time to adjust.

The school says current student athletes who have been granted tuition waivers and continue to compete, as well as students who have signed a letter of intent, will receive waivers through the 2019-2020 academic year, ending June 30, 2020.
