OSHKOSH, Wis — OSHKOSH (NBC 26) -- We’re learning more about the people who helped get students at Oshkosh West High School out of harm’s way moments after the school was evacuated on Tuesday. Tonight NBC26 spoke with some of the unsung heroes who jumped into action, to try and protect others.

When 1,700 students had to evacuate Oshkosh West High School on Tuesday it was a bit chaotic. But today, we’re learning how quickly some folks responded to try and help out.

At Kobussen Buses in Oshkosh they got the call that there had been shots fired at Oshkosh West shortly after 9am on Tuesday. Management says they managed to line up drivers to be stationed outside of the high school within just ten minutes of receiving the request. Management says while they were fielding calls from student’s parents and guardians, they also started getting calls from their drivers who weren’t on duty who wanted to offer their assistance, by transporting students away from the high school and to somewhere safe.

“We didn’t even think about it, us drivers. As everyone else is leaving the location heading away from the danger, are drivers are awesome, we didn’t think twice. They headed right in with no hesitation whatsoever,” says Terry Dedmon the Safety Director at Kobussen Buses.

Management at Kobussen Buses say evacuations are something they train for and they are grateful for their staff, many of whom called in on their day off just to see if they could help out after they had heard what happened.
