APPLETON (NBC 26) -- Two Appleton police officers have been chosen as recipients of the National “Top Cop” award.

A representative with Appleton Police said Officer Paul Christensen and Sergeant Chris Biese are receiving this award as a result of their actions on May 15, 2019, the day firefighter Mitch Lundgaard was shot and killed. Police called Christensen's and Biese's actions on that day, "heroic".

Appleton Fire Department Driver-Engineer Mitch Lundgaard was killed last year when a man opened fire after a rescue call in downtown Appleton. Police shot and killed the gunman.

Appleton Police stated in a news release that Christensen and Biese will received their awards at a date and time to be determined, due to the coronavirus travel restrictions.
