APPLETON (NBC 26) -- Appleton voters have narrowed a field of eight mayoral candidates down to two.

Jake Woodford and James Clemons together took nearly 60 percent of the vote to advance to April's general election.

"I knew once you do all you can you leave it up to the voters and I was pretty clear and concise in my message," Clemons said. "If that's what they wanted, they'd vote for me and if that's what they don't want they'd vote for somebody else. I'm happy with the results so far."

"These results are gratifying and I'm so grateful to the incredible support that we've had for the campaign," Woodford said.

The campaigns aren't done yet. In less than two months voters in Appleton will be at the polls again.

"What I've been talking about is an Appleton that's affordable, safe, and welcoming for all people," Woodford said. "Our vision for Appleton is just that, and I think tonight's results say that our community wants to hear more about that vision."

"It's always going to be the same thing, we need to grow our tax base," Clemons said. "We've got some really good opportunities here, we've got to make sure they're done right long term."

Those are messages both candidates say they'll carry door to door in the days and weeks ahead.
