DE PERE (NBC 26) -- A longtime proposed bridge project crossing the Fox River in De Pere is moving forward.

Leaders from Brown County, along with the City of De Pere and the Town of Lawrence, announced Wednesday they are each budgeting for the cost of engineering and design work for the roads connecting to the new interchange on I-41. It’s part of their support for the Southern Bridge Corridor Project.

If approved, the project will involve building a new Fox River bridge in De Pere and a divided four-lane streets between County Highways GV and X in the Town of Ledgeview and County Highways EB and F in the Town of Lawrence.

"We do believe that once the corridor is developed, the interchange put in place, it will provide extraordinary economic opportunities for not just the city of De Pere, not just the town of Lawrence, or some of the other communities that are directly adjacent to the corridor, but to all of the communities in the region,” said De Pere City Administrator Lawrence Delo.

The plan is for Brown County to pay half of the cost and the other half will be paid by the City Of De Pere and the Town of Ledgeview in their 2021 budgets. A decision is expected next month.
