GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — During National Mental Health Awareness Month experts say it's important to understand the relationship between substance abuse and mental health.
In Green Bay, the Jackie Nitschke Center is one of just a few addiction treatment centers licensed to treat both disorders.
"It can impact the way they form relationships with other people, the quality of life they have in their jobs, even down to the support the way you connect with other people," Alexis Haack, substance abuse counselor at Jackie Nitschke Center.
The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that nearly 50% of people with severe mental disorders are also affected by substance abuse.
