GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Green Bay's city pools are expected to open Saturday, June 12th. However, the city says it still needs to hire 50 lifeguards before next month.

Officials say Covid has made it hard to hire and offer a certification course, as training consists of about seven hours at home and 20 to 25 hours in person.

"We haven't been able to do any review courses. We've had no access to facilities over the last 14, 15 months. Our indoor facilities that we usually use during the school year is through the Green Bay Public Schools and we haven't been able to have access to those pools," said Ann Moeller, City of Green Bay Recreation Supervisor.

The city says it hopes to get more people trained and hired after school is out of session. If they don't have enough lifeguards hired by June, they may make modifications to perhaps opening only one or two city pools instead of all three.
