MENASHA (NBC 26) -- The Menasha Joint School District says its schools will remain in virtual learning, "for the foreseeable future."

The district is also discontinuing sports for the rest of this fall season.

The school district announced a move to virtual learning two weeks ago, and since then the school district says the COVID numbers in the community and surrounding area have continued to rise. The school district also noted a joint statement, which included the City of Menasha, that issued a public health alert over COVID-19.

"Given this situation and the heightened concern for the health and well being of our students and families, we will be discontinuing our athletic opportunities for the remainder of the fall seasons at the middle and high school levels," the school district said in a statement to families.

The school district said it will continue to monitor the data along with the Menasha Health Department until officials start to see a pattern of decline in the virus that would lead them to believe it's safe to resume in-person instruction.

The school district also asked the staff to work from home for the next couple weeks. Click here for more information.
