GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Saturday morning, two local Red Cross volunteers prepared for their deployment across the country to help those affected by the Oregon wildfires.
The Red Cross said volunteers Patricia Peterson and Gary Geisler readied the Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) for their drive to Portland, Oregon. Once there, they will join an ERV driving team that will deliver meals, water, and personal care items to people displaced by the wildfires.
According to Red Cross staff, two other Wisconsin ERV groups deployed Saturday. They said one from Milwaukee and the other from Madison.
"Approximately 18 Wisconsin Red Cross volunteers and staff have deployed to the wildfires with many more likely to go in the coming days," said Steve Hansen, Red Cross Chapter Executive. "Prior to that, we had already deployed nearly 30 volunteers to Hurricane Laura, mostly to Louisiana."
Hansen said anyone interested in volunteering can visit www.RedCross.org/volunteer to register. He said because of the significant need for volunteers, the Red Cross will be looking to provide immediate training for new members and deploy them as quickly as possible. Other ways to help is through making a donation or giving blood.
