NEW LONDON (NBC 26) — New London officials held a press conference this morning to update the community on the latest severe weather situation.

A new shelter has been opened by the Red Cross at the Hortonville High School (155 Warner St), at the high school field house on the east side of the campus. This shelter will replace the previous one at the Washington Center in New London. Anybody impacted by the floodwaters is welcome.

Authorities are actively monitoring the area as severe weather is expected later on Friday.

Sandbagging efforts are ongoing in Fremont as they expect to get more water, said Zac Van Asten with the Waupaca County Emergency Management.

Van Asten said things look "OK" in Weyauwega, but it's still an active situation being monitored.

According to Van Asten, the situation in Manawa is going well as of Friday morning. The wastewater treatment plant is holding, and actions taken to stop floodwaters seem to be holding.

Authorities continue to monitor Clintonville as they are also expected to get more water.

Big Falls Dam is holding, with embankments still in place.

The public is urged to stay out of flooded areas, stay out of the rivers and marshes, and avoid flooded roadways. Authorities stress not driving around the barricades.

“I know we kinda put out these things about don’t go drive around barricades and you know be safe and stay out of the flood waters and all that kind of thing, " Jason Alumbaugh with the National Weather Service said. "Just - this is a heightened kind of idea with that now. We’re talking about protecting life and property. That’s what the National Weather Service’s main mission is. So this is all about protecting life right now.”
