KEWAUNEE COUNTY (NBC 26) -- The district attorney in Kewaunee County says a deputy won't face charges in the death of a kidnapping suspect.
Authorities say the suspect, Luis Cardona, kidnapped his girlfriend from her work in Green Bay back in November. He then drove her to an ATV park in Kewaunee County. Green Bay Police and Kewaunee County Sheriff's Deputies tracked down Cardona's vehicle and surrounded him.
According to the district attorney, Cardona was stopped and seated in the driver's seat when he fired a .45 caliber handgun at his girlfriend, Babette Caraballo, while she was in the passenger seat. She managed to get out of the car, collapsing to the ground, the district attorney says.
The D.A. says Cardona then shot himself in the head. As shots were fired, the district attorney says Deputy Aaron Schley fired his M4 rifle, hitting the vehicle three times. The D.A. says none of the shots hit Cardona.
The district attorney says Deputy Schley's actions were justified and he will not face charges.
The D.A. called the incident a tragedy, but also commended Deputy Schley and first responders for taking action to try and save Babette Caraballo's life. Caraballo was taken to the hospital after the shooting. A GoFundMe has been set up to help in her recovery.
