GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- A majestic bird is soaring once more, thanks to a community effort.

In late July, the Green Bay Police got a call about a wounded red-tailed hawk on the city's west side. The bird had been shot through its wing with an arrow.

Authorities brought it to the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary. Caretakers there worked with Gentle Vet Animal Hospital to nurse the hawk back to health.

On Wednesday it was released into the wild once more.

"It's a happy ending to an unfortunate incident that we had to respond to. It shouldn't have happened in the first place, but to be able to have this animal be out there in the wild back where she belongs...I always say, 'let wildlife be wild', she's doing what she's supposed to be doing in a safe environment now," said Mallory Meves, a Sworn Humane Officer with GBPD.

It's illegal to discharge firearm or bow and arrow in the city of Green Bay. Hawks are protected birds of prey and are not to be shot.
