FREEDOM, Wis. — A family of five in Freedom is without a home after a fire destroyed it.

Homeowner Carol Hennes says the support from her community during this tough time is overwhelming. She was sleeping around one in the afternoon Friday when she woke up to yelling and smoke filling her home.

Her husband, Mark, was trying to thaw their pipes with a torch when their mobile home caught on fire. Carol says she was scared, but the only thing on her mind was knowing her children were safe at school.

The Hennes family couldn’t salvage much, but with the help of family, friends and community members, they're getting by.

"Words are not enough,” Carol says. “I can't believe the outpouring of love and strength and everything that the community has given us and I don't know how I’ll ever be able to pay it back.”

Relatives are also holding a benefit for the family at overtime bar in Oshkosh on Saturday April 13th. There will be raffles, giveaways and more to help get the Hennes family back on their feet.

Friends also set up an account at Capital Credit Unions in the following counties: Brown, Calumet, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto, Outagamie, Shawano, Waupaca, and Winnebago. It’s listed as the Hennes Family Fire Fund.
