GREEN BAY, Wis. — An Appleton Veterans Affairs police officer is credited with helping rescue an 18-month-old child and helping catch a felon.

According to a news release from Veterans Affairs, Officer Cole Kantner was driving in a government vehicle from the Appleton VA Clinic to the Green Bay VA Health Care Center Wednesday when he received an “Attempt to Locate” alert over the Brown County radio frequency.

The notification was for a suspect considered armed and dangerous, wanted for possible kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and felony bail jumping, thought to be driving a dark blue Dodge Charger. Officer Kantner noticed a car in front of him on U.S. Highway 41 that fit the description.

Veterans Affairs says because VA officers have no law enforcement authority off VA property, Kantner was not able to stop the vehicle, so he immediately notified Brown County authorities.

The vehicle was eventually stopped on University Avenue in Green Bay by local law enforcement.

The suspect and the child were found inside the vehicle, along with a firearm. The suspect was taken into custody.
