Ka Xiong Thao was riding in the passenger seat, while her husband drove their family back from shopping for their son's first birthday party. That's when, according to a GoFundMe, a large piece of metal flew through the windshield and struck her in the head.

According to the GoFundMeset up to cover the family's expenses, Thao, 32, is now fighting to recover.

The page says the metal hurt her neck, jaw, brain and spine.

Her family says she will need extensive medical treatment and physical therapy as she recovers.

Police say the debris was a part of a leaf spring, often part of a heavy duty or commercial vehicle.

Her husband, Kor Thao, a United Steel Worker, is safe, the site says, but isn't working in order to take care of his wife and child.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMehas raised more than $16,000.
