We're learning more about the prison guard assaulted earlier this month by an inmate at the Green Bay Correctional Institution.
Sources from inside the prison and State Senator Dave Hansen (D–Green Bay) have confirmed some of the details we've been hearing about for weeks.
We now know that correctional officer John McKee was assaulted by an inmate who tossed as much as five gallons of boiling water on him in the prison kitchen. McKee who is recovering at a Milwaukee burn center is suffering from second and third degree burns that cover nearly 40 percent of his body. Friends of McKee adding that it could take as much as four to six months for the healing process to even begin.
Today NBC26 also learned several radios within the prison were not working properly on the day that McKee was attacked and there was confusion in the midst of the gruesome assault.
"Radios need to be working and operational so you can get that taken care of and have that contact made immediately," said Senator Dave Hansen.
Senator Hansen made a handful of formal requests to the Department of Corrections earlier this week to improve safety measures at the prison. He says that on Wednesday he received a call from the Secretary of the Department of Corrections who sounded receptive to opening up the dialogue of potential upgrades to the facility.
