After a fatal officer-involved shooting Monday in Kewaunee County, the victim's family is asking how this happened to someone they said was not violent.

Tyler Whitmire, 22, was killed Monday night in the Town of Franklin after deputies responded to a call of someone threatening a woman and nearby people with a knife.

Whitmire was a Marine who had just gotten married this spring, according to Ann Lucas, his mother-in-law. She said he was a loving husband who was not violent and not a drug user.

"I think deadly force was used way before it was needed," she said. "I think there was other alternative measures that could have been done. I'm wondering, was the officer armed with a taser? I'm anxious for the dash cam to come out."

That dash cam video is currently being reviewed by the Division of Criminal Investigation.

An autopsy was conducted by the Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner's Office Tuesday. Results will say what, if anything, was in Whitmire's system at the time of his death.

"We want this to be very thorough, we want this to be methodical and we want it to be able to give the answers that everyone deserves and needs but we have to be patient with that," Kewaunee County Sheriff Matt Joski said during a press conference Tuesday.

The deputy who shot and killed Whitmire has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
