Appleton board recommends denying backyard chicken proposal

A proposal to allow chicken coops with up to four hens split the City of Appleton's Health Board in a 3-3 vote Wednesday.

A similar proposal in 2012 failed to gain approval. Alderperson Vered Meltzer reintroduced the measure back in 2015.

The rules drafted in the resolution would allow home owners to complete an application, including an inspections process to have chickens on private property.

The proposal would require chickens to be kept in a coop in the backyard while following cleaning and setback requirements from neighboring buildings.

It moves to the Common Council with a recommendation to deny the resolution after it fell short in committee. The board does not have the final authority to approve or disapprove of the resolution. That decision will be made by the Council March 15 in a public meeting.
