With a heat wave in the forecast for this weekend's Community First Fox Cities Marathon, event organizers decided to add additional resources to help runners stay safe during the race.

The marathon and half marathon are both Sunday, September 24.

Organizers plan to set up more stations for runners to access cooling buses, water and ice, and will have additional medical stations.

"Our first priority for all of our participants is their safety, that's number one," said Amanda Secor, the Fox Cities Marathon spokesperson. "They can always race another day."

Event organizers said if runners decide the heat is too much to run a full marathon, they can run the half marathon at no additional charge.

Race week events begins Friday with the Guardian Kids Fun Run, Huggies Diaper Dash and Huggies Toddler Trot at Fox Cities Stadium.

On Saturday, Affinity Medical Group Orthopedic and Sports Medicine holds its 5K run/walk at Riverside Park in Neenah.

There is also a Network Health Health and Wellness Expo at the UW-Fox Valley Field House.

The marathon and half marathon take place Sunday beginning at 6:55 a.m. It is a Boston Marathon qualifier. You can find the course map here.
