Veterans Day 2016: Events, deals & freebies

On Friday, Nov. 11, the country will celebrate Veterans Day — a day to honor those who have served in the armed forces.

Many restaurants and businesses will honor veterans with freebies, specials and events. Below is a list of the most notable ones. 

 

Events

Veterans Visit De Pere Middle School: 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  In conjunction with Wisconsin Veterans Affairs and The Veterans in the Classroom Program, De Pere Middle School has invited area veterans into classrooms to speak about their military experience and what it means to be a veteran.

Operation Quick Start: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Veterans and their families will learn how to prepare for a high-tech career. Fill out college applications for free. Take your admissions tests for free. Meet with Veterans Service Specialists.  Get assistance with military benefits forms.

Symbols of Service: 8:00 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. Free breakfast for veterans followed by a Veterans Day program and a panel discussion at Einstein Middle School.  

Elmore Elementary Veteran's Day Assembly: 8:45 a.m. This annual event includes fifth grade students singing to guests of honor and recognizing each veteran in attendance and the branch of the military they served. Veterans will leave with a poem and a pin from the students.

Hortonville Middle School Veterans Day Program: 9:30 a.m. This Veteran's Day Program will include musical performances, student speeches, and a check presentation to Old Glory Honor Flight. 

United Patriotic Society Veterans Day Event: 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Green Bay East High School Band will play at 9:30 at the Brown County Arena. Mayor James Schmitt and County Executive Troy Streckenbach will speak at 10:30 am. A firing squad will commemorate World War 1's cessation of hostilities 11:11 am. Coffee and doughnuts will be served, sponsored by the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 177.

Oshkosh Patriotic Council Veterans Day Ceremony: 10:45 a.m. This year's guest speaker will be Command Sgt. Maj. Peter Running. The event will be held at the Winnebago County Courthouse. 

Outagamie County Veterans Day Program: 11:00 a.m. The 2016 program will include a salute to the U.S. Coast Guard. The event will be held at the Outagamie County Administration Building. 

Park Community Charter School Veterans Day Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Park Community students will perform a song and second grade students will present the funds they have raised to help with maintenance of the park. The event will take place at the Veterans Memorial Park in Kaukauna. 

Menasha Veterans Day Program: 11:00 a.m. This event will take place at the Menasha Public Library. 

River View Middle School Veterans Day Event: 1:15 p.m. The program will include the presentation of the flag by the Boy Scouts, the Pledge of Allegiance, the Star Spangled Banner (sung by the jazz choir) and recognition of any veterans present.

Neenah High School Veterans Day Ceremony: 1:30 p.m. Band, choir and orchestra students from Neenah High School will perform and veterans in attendance will be recognized. Local veterans will speak about their experiences and what it means to be a veteran. Neenah High School students will attend the celebration.

MacArthur Elementary School Veterans Day Program: 2:30 p.m. Students will perform patriotic songs for veterans, students will thank them for their service, and veterans will introduce themselves and the branch of military they served.

Veterans Week Closing Ceremony: 3:00 p.m. Flag Lowering Ceremony with Taps at the NWTC Green Bay Campus. 

1st Annual Walk of Remembrance: 4:30 p.m. Join SouthernCare Hospice and the Fond du Lac American Legion Auxiliary in their 1st Annual Walk of Remembrance in honor of our veterans both past and present. The event takes place at the Fond du Lac County Fair Grounds. 

 

Free Food

Denny's: 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Free Grand Slam breakfast from 5 a.m. to noon. for active-duty military personnel and veterans with military ID.

IHOP: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Free stack of Red, White & Blue pancakes on Nov. 11 for all active-duty military and veterans.

Veterans Pancake Breakfast: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Hosted by the Fond du Lac Senior Center and sponsored by Lake View Place, this free veteran's breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, applesauce and a beverage.

American Heroes Cafe: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Festival Foods on 1355 Oneida Street in Menasha will be providing complimentary coffee and donuts to veterans in the community room in the store's upper mezzanine. 

6th Annual Texas-Size Thank You: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participating Texas Roadhouse locations will be offering a free meal to veterans. 

Chipotle: 3:00 p.m. to close Buy-one-get-one free deal on burritos, bowls, salads and tacos.

Red Robin: All Day Participating Red Robin locations will be offering a free Red's Tavern Double Burger with Bottomless Steak Fries to veterans. 

The Bar: All Day All nine Bar Group Locations will be offering a free entree or sandwich & side to any veteran or active service member.

Applebee's: All Day Free meal on Nov. 11 for all veterans and active-duty service members. Choose from seven entrees; drink is not included.

Chili's: All Day Choose a free entree from a special Veteran's Day menu on Nov. 11.

Chuck E. Cheese's: All Day Free personal pizza for active-duty military and veterans.

Cracker Barrel: All Day Free Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake dessert for active-duty military personnel and veterans with military ID.

Fazoli's: All Day  Free build-your-own pasta bowl for active-duty military personnel and veterans with military ID.

Hooter's: All Day Free meal from the Hooters Veterans Day menu on Nov. 11 for all active-duty and retired military personnel (dine-in only; purchase of beverage required).

Olive Garden: All Day  Free entree from a special menu for active-duty military and military veterans.

Outback Steakhouse: All Day Free Bloomin' Onion and non-alcoholic beverage on Nov. 11 with a valid military ID.

Red Lobster: All Day Free Bloomin' Onion and non-alcoholic beverage on Nov. 11 with a valid military ID.

Red Robin: All Day Free Red's Tavern Double Burger and endless fries for active-duty military personnel and veterans with military ID.

TGI Fridays: All Day Free lunch entree (up to $12) until 2 p.m. for active-duty military personnel and veterans with military ID. Meal is limited to certain entrees.

 

Other Freebies

The Brown County Rifle Range: 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Brown County Park Department is honoring all veterans and active-duty military members with free gun and archery site-in.

NEW Zoo: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Free admission for veterans. 

NewStyle Salons: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Free haircuts for veterans at Green Bay and Fox Cities locations. 

Neville Museum: All Day Free admission to the Neville Museum and their immediate family members will receive half-price admission to the Museum as a thank you for their service to our country.

Grease Monkey: All Day Free full service oil changes for veterans at participating Grease Monkey Centers. 

Fantastic Sams: All Day Free haircut on Nov. 11. for active-duty military personnel and veterans with military ID. 

Great Clips: All Day Free haircut on Nov. 11 or a free-haircut card for use on a later date for active-duty military personnel and veterans. Non-military members can purchase a service on Veterans Day and receive a free haircut card to gift to a veteran. Veterans can redeem their free haircut cards from Nov. 12 to Dec. 31.

Lowe's: All Day Veterans and their families receive 10 percent off their purchases on Friday.

Meineke: All Day  Free basic oil change for active-duty military personnel and veterans with military ID.

National Parks: All Day Free admission on Nov. 11 at parks that normally charge an admission fee.

Sport Clips: All Day Free haircut for active-duty military and veterans on Nov. 11 with military ID.

UFC Gym: All Day Free gym use from Nov. 11 to Nov. 13 for active-duty military personnel, veterans and military families. Training sessions are free on Nov. 12.

Walgreens: All Day Customers with a Walgreens Balance Rewards card and a valid military ID can get 20 percent off their purchases.
