Students challenged in STEAM competition

You've likely heard a lot about the importance of "STEM" but what about "STEAM." It's a initiative to tie art into science and math curriculum.  A group of leaders in  education introducing students in Brown County to the idea through a little competition.

Middle school students from across Brown County were challenged to create a complex machine to do a simple task. The project speared headed by DKG, A Society of Women Educators asked the students to not just think mechanically but add creativity and beauty to each machine.

"If you think about the technology that's out there things need to not only function but they need to be beautiful and be creative," said Stephanie Nardi

From feeding a gold fish to creating a bath bomb and starting a fire the students from West DePere, Green Bay and Pulaski all submitted projects. Pulaski Middle School sweeping first second and third place. The winners created a machine to water plants.  "The most difficult part was all the dominos because sometimes it wouldn't work and the patients of putting up all those again was nerve wracking, " said Bradley Cuturia
 

Organizers are hoping to make this event an annual one.
