A mother accused of accidentally smothering and killing her three-month old baby was sentenced to 2 years in jail Wednesday in Outagame County court.

Keshia Waupoose, 27, entered "no contest" pleas to charges of second-degree reckless homicide and child abuse in March.

Police say Waupoose was drinking with friends at her Appleton home in August 2015. She allegedly went to bed drunk in a makeshift bed next to her three-month old baby.

According to the criminal complaint, the baby's father came into the room and noticed the child wasn't breathing. The complaint says witnesses told police they believe Waupoose rolled over on top of the baby suffocating and killing her.

An Outagamie County Judge sentenced Waupoose to one year in jail for both counts, however she gets credit for time served. She was also sentenced to 24 years probation, but will serve those concurrently and ultimately serve 14 years.

Police didn't arrest Waupoose until more than a year later because investigators said they needed to interview other witnesses who were uncooperative.

Waupoose remains in jail on a $20,000 cash bond.
