A man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend in Appleton Thursday has been formally charged for the crime.

Johnny Scott, 58, was charged with first degree intentional homicide and first degree recklessly endangering safety in Outagamie County court Friday.

Scott allegedly shot Annie Ford, 48, early Thursday morning. The two were arguing over money, a criminal complaint said.

"From everything that I've heard, she was very involved in the community, very involved in her church, had kids in the school district, so that is a big impact in our community. " said Melinda Tempelis, the Outagamie County District Attorney. "When something like this happens, it's very tragic."

Scott is also accused of pointing the gun at her 15-year-old son, but told him "I don't want to do this to you," court documents said.

Officers were called to a duplex on the 3300 block of East Canary Street three times throughout the overnight hours from Wednesday to Thursday. The first two calls were described as a domestic incident and a disturbance.

The third call came around 2 a.m. When officers arrived on scene, they found Scott in the driveway of the home. He told police they would find a woman inside with gunshot wounds, officers said.

Police found Ford with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

In Wisconsin, an officer can arrest someone if he or she has "reasonable grounds to believe that the person is committing or has committed domestic abuse."

Officers can also arrest a person if there is evidence of physical injury to an alleged victim or there is a "reasonable basis" for believing that continued domestic abuse against an alleged victim is likely.

In this situation, police did not believe the situation warranted the mandatory arrest law, according to Appleton Police Sgt. David Lund.

Scott's bond was set at $750,000. He will be back in court on Thursday. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
