As the holiday weekend wound down, heavy traffic slowed down drivers in parts of Northeast Wisconsin.

Delays plagued drivers on I-41 and I-43, particularly in areas where roads are under construction.

The unofficial start to summer is when traffic spikes, according to Wisconsin state troopers.

State troopers recommend drivers obey the speed limit, drive sober and wear their seatbelts.

Also, stay off cell phones and focus completely on the road, especially in construction zones in parts of Brown, Outagamie and Winnebago counties. A reminder: drivers can now be fined in Wisconsin for talking on the phone while driving through construction zones.

"This is the time of the yea where construction crews need to get out on the interstates, take advantage of the nice weather and improve the interstates for people who travels on the interstate," said Mark Haessly, a Wisconsin state trooper.

Finally, the Wisconsin State Patrol reminds drivers to keep a safe distance between them and the car in front of them.
