Governor Walker talks education investments during school visits

Posted

Governor Scott Walker visited schools across the state Wednesday, including Southern Door High School in Brussels, to talk about planned education investments and tour fabrication laboratories (fab labs).

A fab lab is a high-tech workshop with computer-controlled manufacturing components such as 3D printers, laser engravers and plasma cutters.

"This isn’t just a historic investment in our public schools, it is also a significant investment in Wisconsin’s future workforce,” said Governor Walker. “We know that ensuring our students’ success, both in and outside the classroom, is critical to the state’s continued economic success."

During his visit, Governor Walker also talked about the state budget discussions. The budget is two months late, but Republicans said Tuesday they have reached a deal to pass it.

The $76 billion budget proposal includes increasing state spending on K-12 schools by $639 million over the next two years.

The budget-writing Joint Finance Committee was scheduled to meet Wednesday. Once its finished, the budget will go to the Assembly.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said the full Assembly could take up the budget on September 13 or 14. If it's passed on Sept. 13, the Senate could give final approval the next day.
