An 80-year-old woman was struck and killed in the Town of Pierce as she crossed the highway to get her mail, according to the Kewaunee County Sheriff's Department.

A 46-year-old driver from Algoma called the sheriff's department to report he had hit a pedestrian on STH 42 south of Eighth Road in the Town of Pierce.

"It's heartbreaking because, she was just so lively, and just to hear something so tragic happen to someone so beautiful, it was very devastating," said Jennie Pavlat.

Pavlat says the victim was more than a neighbor to her.

"She was one of my first bosses when I got out of school," said Pavlat.

The Kewaunee County Sheriff's Department said the 80-year-old woman was walking across Highway 42 in the town of Pierce to get her mail.

"On the return trip, on the way back eastbound, across the road, was then struck by the motor vehicle," said Matt Joski, Kewaunee County Sheriff's Department.

The driver called the sheriff's office after getting care from crews. The woman later died.  Sheriff Joski recommends drivers be on alert, even when driving in rural areas.

"Pedestrians deserve our diligence. Whether they are walking along the road way or if they're trying to get across the roadway, if it means you have to stop, come to a complete stop," said Joski.

Community members agree everyone can learn from this tragedy.

"It's just a good reminder that something can happen in a split second," said Joski.
