GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC 26) -- The much-anticipated Wisconsin-Notre Dame football game, scheduled to be played at Lambeau Field in October, is on hold as the Big Ten moves to a conference-only schedule for 2020.

UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez said the two programs are hoping to reschedule the non-conference contest.

"We all share in the disappointment about that and are exploring options to reschedule those games," the Wisconsin AD, and former football coach, said. "We look forward to playing Notre Dame in 2021 at Soldier Field in Chicago and both programs are committed to rescheduling the game at Lambeau."

Alvarez also noted that Wisconsin will not be able to "accommodate a full stadium" for home games at Camp Randall Stadium. He also acknowledged that uncertainty lies ahead, as college football determines if and how to play amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There are still many questions to be answered," he said. "As the past few months have shown, we all need to be flexible in these uncertain times. As decisions are made about what the 2020 fall season will look like, we will continue to communicate that information."

The updated Big Ten schedule featuring conference-only games is expected to be announced in about a week.
