STEVENS POINT, Wis. (NBC 26) — Another major golf tournament is coming to Wisconsin.

SentryWorld Golf Course, in Stevens Point, will host the 2023 U.S. Senior Open, which features the world's top golfers aged 50 and older.

It will be the 18th time a United States Golf Association (USGA) event has been held in Wisconsin. The 2017 U.S. Open at Erin hills and the 2007 U.S. Senior Open at Whistling Straits are two other notable USGA events to be held in the Badger State.

“The USGA is pleased to return to SentryWorld and the state of Wisconsin to conduct the most prestigious championship in senior golf,” sJohn Bodenhamer, the USGA's senior managing director of championships, said in a press release. “We know that the region and community will enthusiastically support the U.S. Senior Open and that SentryWorld will provide a complete test for an international field competing for the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy.”

SentryWorld has hosted USGA events twice betfore: the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship in 2019 and the 1986 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links final.

Wisconsin has become a haven for championship golf in the 21st century. The PGA Championship has been held at Whistling Straits three times, most recently in 2015. The Ryder Cup, golf's most prestigious international event, is scheduled to be played at Whistling Straits next October.

Wisconsin natives Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly both figure to compete in the U.S. Senior Open when it comes to Stevens Point. Stricker is the reigning U.S. Senior Open champion who will also captain the United States Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits.

John Daly could also compete, depending on his health. Fan favorite Phil Mickelson will be 53 and eligible to compete at that time, though he has shown little interest in playing in senior events in the past.
