McCarren: Cardinals a 'huge test' for Packers

Posted

Sunday may truly bring the ultimate determinant of how good the Green Bay Packers truly are.

The 12-2 Arizona Cardinals are their opponent, and they may be the best combination of excellence and balance in the NFL.

"It's a huge test. It's a great indicator of where the Packers are at as the regular season draws to a close," said McCarren on "Wisconsin's Afternoon News."

"Arizona is really a good team, top to bottom. They've been doing it offensively, clearly NO. 1 in the league. That says it all," he added.

"Defensively, they're not ranked quite as high, but they're ranked real high in takeaways. They play real well together. I know they lost Tyrann Mathieu, one of their best players, but they're still pretty good."

Against that defense, the Packers will have to find a way to reach the level of performance they have not reached since September. They haven't had a day of both 250-plus yards passing and 100-plus rushing since September 28.

"I thought they were back on track after the Cowboys game, to be honest. They got the running game going. That's when the Packers are at their best, when Eddie Lacy is being Eddie Lacy. That opens up so much in the passing game, the protection gets easier," said McCarren.

"Then Oakland, it was kind of hit and miss again, though they did what they had to do at crunch time...encouraging, but overall, that complete game offensively when you've got it cooking running and passing, I think we're still searching."
