DE PERE, Wis. (NBC 26) — Both De Pere and Bay Port entered Friday night with 2-0 records in the WIAA's spring football season. But based on past history, it seemed the Pirates were the favorites.

The Redbirds thought otherwise.

Behind three touchdowns from sophomore phenom Gabe Herman (two passing and one receiving), De Pere beat Bay Port 20-13 to snap the Pirates' 38-game winning streak against Fox River Classic Conference opponents.

"Talk about how the greatest levels of performance require the greatest levels of belief and you saw that from the opening kickoff," De Pere head coach Chad Michalkiewicz said. "We saw that from these young men. To believe and put something together like this its just incredible.

"A lot of emotion from everybody and rightfully so," he added.

Bay Port hadn't lost a game against a fellow FRCC opponent since October of 2015 when, you guessed it, De Pere handed them a 26-7 loss.

This game may not technically count as an FRCC matchup - as both teams are competing in the new Fox Valley Classic conference this spring. But that didn't stop the Redbirds from celebrating.

"We did something the De Pere program hasn't done in a long time and that's beat Bay Port," Herman said. "They've been running the state for how long now? It was great win to come out here (and get this done)."
