GREEN BAY — "A Starr shines a new dawn begins" is what Packer fans will see as they drive down Lombardi Avenue.
"It's a way of saying goodbye to Bart Starr, while also welcoming new players and a new coach," said Jim Pecard, one of the organizers of the design.
It's a tradition that has been going on for 18 years. On Labor Day, fans paint the fence ahead of the first game to celebrate a new season. This year, it seemed like an easy decision to dedicate the fence design to Bart Starr.
"It was only fitting that this fence had something to do with Bart," Pecard said.
The fence has been around since 1984 and is recognized as a historical site by the city of Green Bay. The hope with the new fence is to use Starr's legacy for the new players and coaches this year.
"There are Packer legends like Bart who have made their careers in Green Bay," Pecard said. "These new players can do the same."
