The Appleton North Lightning held off De Pere 49-34 to win the D1 girls state championship game on Saturday at the Resch Center. The Lightning earn the first WIAA title in city history and finish the season undefeated at 28-0.
Paige Schabo scored 16 points and Kari Brekke added 13 for North. The Lightning never trailed in the game and pulled away in the second half to take home the gold basketball.
De Pere was held to 29.3 percent shooting from the floor for the game. Rachel Kerkhoff led the Redbirds with 11 points.
