Tech Talk: Ways to Save Your Data

Posted
You love your smartphone. You use it all the time to find anything online, buy stuff on sale, and how to get to a friend’s house. But all that power comes with a cost – one that wasn’t exactly apparent. Uou don’t want to eat away at the data too quickly, because it can cost you cash.

AT&T’s Jason Strong joined us on “Wisconsin Tonight” to discuss ways to save money.

The best way to conserve data is always to try to do your data intensive work while you're connected to Wi-Fi.

1. Wi-Fi Assist

With Apple's latest update, it automatically turned on Wi-Fi Assist.

It uses your cellular data when the Wi-Fi signal weakens.

To opt out, go to Settings, Cellular, scroll all the way to the bottom. Toggle off Wi-Fi Assist.

2. Background app refresh

Background app refresh automatically updates your apps and can use a lot of data in the process.

To adjust, go to Settings, General, Background app refresh, then choose what you want to refresh automatically.

3. Location services

This determines which apps have access to your location.

You can choose. Just go to Settings, Privacy, Location Services, then decide which apps should have access to your whereabouts.

But then you can take it one step further.

At the bottom of Location Services, you'll find System Services. Click there and scroll down. Look for a section called "frequent locations." It tracks the locations you've visited the most.

Making these adjustments to your phone can save your data and save you money.

If you don’t want to worry about managing data – AT&T has a great new unlimited data plan.

Effective January 12, 2016, customers can select an exciting new plan called the AT&T Unlimited Plan. Customers can get unlimited data and unlimited talk and text on up to 10 lines, when they have AT&T Wireless and DIRECTV or U-verse TV. Plus, DIRECTV or U-verse TV customers can get $500 in credits, when porting to AT&T, purchasing a smartphone on AT&T Next, signing up for this plan, and trading in an eligible smartphone.

On this plan, after 22GB of data usage on a line in a bill cycle, for the remainder of the bill cycle AT&T may slow data speeds on that line in areas experiencing network congestion.
