Tax Filing Step-by-Step

Posted
There are several ways that you can file for an extension:

1) You can file directly for free through the IRS’s Direct Pay system (don’t worry it’s free)

In the “Apply Payment To” column choose 4868 the rest of the columns will auto fill for you.

Click the “Continue” button and follow the prompts. You will need your 1040 from the last time you filed, as well as your SSN and other necessary info. It is important to note that filing for an extension does not grant an extension on taxes you owe; it’s for tax returns only.

2) You can e-file through one of thirteen free filing programs listed at IRS.gov

3) You can print out Tax Form 4868 and send it in via snail mail

There are always special circumstances for those living abroad, or serving our country. For exceptions and other rules on filing you can find most answers at IRS.gov, or talk to your local accountant who can answer any other questions you have.
