The De Pere Fire Dept. recently purchased the Lucas Device with the help of The BayCare Clinic Foundation.
The Lucas Chest Compression System, or Lucas Device, is a portable device that automates cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR as it is commonly called. The Lucas device keeps a patient's blood circulating, which in turn delivers much needed oxygen to the patient's organs. The device can be kept pumping on arrival at the hospital while physicians or surgeons continue providing emergency care to the patient.
It's ideal for sudden cardiac arrest patients. It's a life-saver. The Lucas Device can be set up and put in place by one of us in a matter of seconds, and it's safer for the patient because it will constantly administer CPR.
It compresses a patient's chest at an enhanced rate; about 100 chest compressions per minute. Al Matzke, with De Pere Fire, explains, while the device is doing its work, their paramedics can really focus energies on other areas of the patient's emergency care during the ambulance ride to the hospital. So it's a vital and much-needed piece of equipment. They’ve already encountered situations where they’ve had to use the Lucas Device and it's exceeding expectations.
