It is estimated that one in five youth ages 13-18 have a mental health disorder and that 50 percent of cases of mental illness begin by middle school age.
The Hortonville Area School District (HASD) has launched a comprehensive school-based mental health program called E3 (educate, engage and empower) for K-12 students, parents and HASD staff.
The program was developed based on trending data and survey results that showed the need for student support in the area of social emotional learning related to mental health. Education, prevention and early intervention are key components to E3.
E3 program components include on-site access to mental health therapy at each building, mental health screening for students at Hortonville High School, staff education, awareness and resources.
This is one of the earliest programs of its kind in the state.
