Our Better Biking segment is back for another spring season.
Tracy Flucke, of WE BIKE, etc. and John Sommers from JB Cycle and Sport in Howard joined us on “Wisconsin Tonight” to discuss how to pick the right bike for you.
So, where can you get a bicycle? If you are on a tight budget or just want to start basic:
i. Green Bay Bicycle Collective - refurbishes bicycles to sell at reduced price – $20- $25 or will donate if there is really a need
ii. Contact Bay Shore Bicycle Club – ask about members selling bicycles
iii. Attend police auctions where they sell unclaimed bicycles – April 23rd at Brown County Fairgrounds is the City of Green Bay auction
iv. Look in your garage you might have a bicycle that will work
If you get a used bicycle make sure it is in good condition – take to local bicycle shop to have them check it over and recommend repairs. The bicycle will not be fun to ride if it is in poor shape.
If you want to buy a new bicycle – recommend you go to one of the local bicycle shops – we have some great shops in town with knowledgeable staff that can help you select a bicycle that will serve your needs and be within your budget.
Picking the right bike all depends on what you want to use it for – city riding, trail, off - road, speed, touring etc.
i. Comfort Bicycle (Expedition) – Comfort also known as a Hybrid – casual city riding and general fitness. Very upright riding position
ii. Fitness Bicycle (Vita) – Flat bar road bike, fast fitness bike. Can be used same as a road bike but with a slightly more upright riding position. Good choice for commuting.
iii. Mountain Bicycle (Pitch) – Off road single track in the forest. The Brown County Reforestation Camp is a great example of local area for mountain biking.
iv. Road Bicycle (Roubaix) – Commonly used on long distance group or century rides and road racing – speed and distance is important.
