Recovery efforts in Texas after Hurricane Harvey could take years, according to FEMA, and volunteers are needed in all 50 counties impacted by the storm.
Many Wisconsin volunteers have already gone south to help, but one more group is preparing for the call.
The Wisconsin National Guard could send troops to help in Harvey's wake. The state's "Red Arrow" Infantry Brigade Combat Team and some Army aviation soldiers are being told they could be a part of the National Guard's response.
That includes more than 3,000 guardsmen and women.
The National Guard Bureau said 30,000 troops could be sent in from across the country.
While no Wisconsin National Guard members are in the affected area yet, thousands from Texas and other states are already helping.
"This is what we're trained and designed to do, is to help people in a situation like this," said Capt. Joe Trovato, a spokesman with the Wisconsin National Guard. "Certainly if Wisconsin was in a similar situation, we would hope that other states would be willing to lend a hand as well."
Captain Trovato said he wouldn't speculate on when the decision would be made to send the Wisconsinites down, but he said if that call comes, the Guard would be ready to go very quickly.
While most of the state's aviation units are deployed overseas, leaders said the state does have Black Hawk helicopters available to help.
