GREEN BAY, WI -- 48 million people nationwide are traveling at least 50 miles from home this Thanksgiving holiday.

Here, in Wisconsin, AAA estimates close to 1 million people will be hitting the roads.

AAA spokespeople say they're anticipating more travelers taking to the roads and skies this Thanksgiving than any time since 2007.

From now until Sunday, highways and interstates should see an average of two percent more cars than last year.

NBC26 spoke with some drivers Wednesday, coming from western Wisconsin to Green Bay through Wausau.

They say they're glad their journey is over.

"Rain, sleet, snow, and some of the worst driving you'll ever see," describes driver Ed Robins, thankful to be off the roads. "People speeding, tailgating, cutting in and out of lanes--horrible driving."

The DOT says most of their road construction projects have wrapped up.

But drivers should still expect some delays, and congestion.

The DOT is also warning drivers about deer, which they say seem to still be highly active.

Travel experts estimate another 72,000 people are taking to the skies for thanksgiving travel.

"Definitely plane. I've got to go with the plane," says Brett Deccy, at Austin Straubel Airport. For Connecticut, it's a 17-hour drive. Hopefully [there are] no delays in Chicago, or anything like that. So, I've got my fingers crossed."
