Waupaca County storm leaves a wake of damage

Posted

In Waupaca County, thousands of people prepared for the worst Wednesday afternoon as the winds began to push.

"All of a sudden he said we need to get to the basement and it was bad, it was really bad," said Kathy Hanegraaf of the Town of Waupaca, describing how her and her husband rushed inside.

It was the 70 mile per hour gusts of wind that stretched across a 12 mile path moving southwest to the northeast corner of the county that left many dealing with the aftermath.

"We had some trees across our driveway and my husband’s truck, trees down on the power lines, boats capsized, full sized boats on lifts capsized," added Hanegraaf.

Many were left without power in the town of Waupaca, many more, were just plain stuck.

"There was debris everywhere and my sister was stranded on the road," said Hanegraaf.

Once you get out of the town of Waupaca and into the city, there was quite a bit more damage to see.

At the Bethany Pines assisted living facility, they lost power like much of the community. Fortunately they had back-up generators and everyone is OK, despite losing power at a facility with so many special needs to fulfill.

While picking up from the storm will take some time, and electricity for many isn't quite restored yet, many in Waupaca County are still grateful for what their community has managed to hold intact.

"Everybody was helping everybody and it was really cool. It was sad for the storm, but not to see everybody helping," said Hanegraaf.
