A woman who reportedly attended Gov. Scott Walker's presidential campaign launch event in 2015 and posted a picture of herself with him has been charged with being a covert agent for Russia inside the U.S.
Federal prosecutors announced the arrest of Maria Butina on Monday. She's been charged with conspiracy to act as an unregistered agent of the Russian government and accused of working to infiltrate American political organizations, including the National Rifle Association.
Mother Jones magazine reported in May that Butina had attended Walker's campaign launch. The article included a link to a photo of Walker with Butina. The magazine says Butina also posted pictures of herself meeting Walker and other politicians in Tennessee in 2015.
Walker's re-election campaign spokesman had no immediate comment Monday.
